NHK纪录片《新丝绸之路 动荡的大地纪行》系列，沿丝绸之路干道，力图描绘正在发生巨大变化的中亚、南俄和中近东地区的历史和现状，是2005年播出的，描写丝路中国段现状的“新丝绸之路”系列的续篇，描写丝路西段的今天。
苏联崩溃后，中亚各国的独立，民族纷争的爆发，伊斯兰的复兴以及中国势力的渗透…生活在丝绸之路西方大地上的人们，在汹涌激荡的时代浪潮中饱受冲击的同时，顽强地抗争求生。
《新丝绸之路系列Ⅱ 动荡的大地纪行》不仅仅只是对历史浪漫的探访，也是倾听和记录、在拥有数千年历史的丝路大地上，顽强生活的人们的心声之旅。
海拔五千米崇山峻岭环抱中的南高加索，是联结丝绸之路的要冲，有五十个民族杂居，有独特的民族音乐、教会建筑和葡萄酒等，被称为是民族文化的宝库。
同时，历史上这里不断遭受东西方各大帝国的侵略，民族纷争的战火至今绵绵不息，是丝绸之路的恩惠和灾难历史的象征性地域。
本集走访了在长年的战火下，培育了独特文化的南高加索三国：格鲁吉亚，阿塞拜疆和亚美尼亚。
凝固的树液散发出的不可思议的奶香，为古阿拉伯带来了繁荣。
本片追溯乳香之路的轨迹，探访古代示巴王国后裔的潦倒，和现代石油大国新贵的奢华。三千年前的示巴王国曾富甲天下，而五十年前的沙特阿拉伯，一半的国民依然过着游牧生活。
纵贯阿拉伯半岛一千五百公里，横跨古今三千年的时空之旅，倾听人间荣枯盛衰的样板故事。
有中亚瑞士美称的高山之国吉尔吉斯，和丝路绿洲之都乌兹别克斯坦，从苏联独立十六年后的今天，依然没有摆脱困境。
随着大量廉价中国商品的流入，在国境的荒野上出现了城镇，棉花田转眼变成巨大的市场，因本国产业停滞而失业的人们，纷纷当起运送、贩卖中国货的司机和小贩维生。而在多民族共存的千年古都，伊斯兰教东山再起，犹太民族的后裔们却正迅速消失…..
本集描写的是在苏联崩溃后的漩涡中，人们顽强求生的身姿。
渐入佳境的系列第四集，舞台是苏联崩溃后的中亚哈萨克斯坦，至富庶的南俄草原地带的四千公里旅途。
片中描写了抛弃了一切、回归故国哈萨克斯坦的中国哈萨克族;在斯大林时代被强制长途迁移、把异乡的欧亚大陆荒原视为祖国的朝鲜族;在是返乡保家卫国还是在他乡苟且安生、这两个痛苦抉择中动摇不定的车臣族。最后是南俄顿河畔，以誓死卫国为口号，正向沙皇帝国时期的军国风习返租归宗的哥萨克族，昔日的军人精英学校死灰复燃，民兵志愿军随时准备捐躯殉国…..
本集以祖国为主题，让观众思考，人们心目中梦寐以求的祖国，究竟是什么，而在爱国主义之路的尽头，又将会是什么。
本片与之前的几部比较，风格有所变化，或许之前的格式，无法容纳像本集这样坚实有分量的内容吧，可称是系列翘楚之作。
沿着由奥斯曼帝国在二十世纪初期兴建的，纵贯中东南北的希贾兹铁道的遗迹，走访叙利亚和约旦，描写动荡不安的今日中东。
被阿拉伯的劳伦斯破坏的希贾兹铁道，是今日中东战乱的原点，交织着因战乱而被迫丧失祖国的人们的过去和现在。
最近，土耳其与库尔德之间冲突加剧，局势大有一触即发之势。作为东西方文明交汇点的土耳其，正因无国之民-库尔德人的活动而动荡不安。

动荡不安的中亚、南俄、中近东[新丝绸之路]之旅的最终集，造访的是丝路最后一百公里上的叙利亚和黎巴嫩。
这个地区各种宗教、宗派毗邻而存，是罕见的宗教马赛克地带。节目带我们去到叙利亚深山中恪守基督教两千年的世外桃源、黎巴嫩贝卡谷地的罗马神殿和什叶派圣寺、守卫传说中的黎巴嫩雪松的基督教马龙派信徒村落….
这个地区也是宗教和宗派对立不断的纷争地带。黎巴嫩战争的伤痕未愈，什叶派和逊尼派的对峙复起，在市民冲突中痛失爱子的父亲，向我们诉说心声。
