社会人文纪录片《阿里郎》是一部非常极端的电影，无论是从形式到内容。该片的画面非常简单，除了一些描述金基德日常生活起居的简单画面之外，大部分画面内容都是他的面部特写。
在一间简陋的山间小屋中，导演金基德为自己准备了一顶帐篷，吃着最简单的食物，取雪作为水饮用。唯一能够证明他身份的是一溜摆放在柜子上的荣誉奖章，其中包括柏林的银熊奖和威尼斯的金狮奖。2008年之前，女演员拍摄意外、助理盗用剧本等事情让金基德心灰意冷，并令他产生了再也拍不了电影的恐惧，之后他患上社交恐惧症而上山隐居，拒绝与外界发生联系。隐居一段时间后，金基德希望用一部电影来重新审视自己的创作，给自己一个机会去重新看待电影，以及重新思考自己到底要拍什么样的电影，于是拍摄纪录片《阿里郎》的想法诞生。
