纪录片《流浪北京》记录了20世纪80年代期间五位自由艺术家在北京的生活。张慈毕业后，被分配到偏远地区，与周围的生活状态不能融合，所以到“文化中心”的北京来“混”。跟张慈一样“混”北京的还有从事摄影的高波、画画的张大力和张夏平以及戏剧导演牟森。他们或放弃老家的工作来到北京，或从北京大学毕业后留在北京。他们通过不同的路径来到这座城市，但目的却大致相似，即希望在北京实现自己的艺术梦想。
纪录片《流浪北京》的叙述语言是极度个人化的。该片没有任何解说词，仅有少数字幕。这部纪录片的行进主要靠人物的互相评述进行。《流浪北京》所表达的内容和思想也是个人化的。它表达的是五个京漂一族在北京的生活以及他们矛盾的思想和内心。该片的构图是倾斜的，不标准的。国家主义的纪录片，对人物进行采访，被采访人物总是位于画面的中心，景别也是固定不变的。而在《流浪北京》中，被采访的人没有一个位于画面的中心，全都是偏向一旁的，采访的景别也不是一成不变的。这既是为了与国家主义纪录片有所区别，同时也从一个侧面表示人物处于社会的边缘，他们心中充满矛盾。
