纪录片《丹顶鹤》描述了中国自然保护区对丹顶鹤保护研究的故事。丹顶鹤是全球濒危物种、中国一级保护动物，全球野生丹顶鹤只有不到2400只。
春天是生命复苏的时节，江苏盐城国家级珍禽自然保护区里 却突然间安静下来，大批在此 过冬的候鸟迁徙离开，曾经在 这里生活了4个多月的野生丹顶 鹤也飞回北方度夏，它们再次 回来要等到半年后的深秋了， 此时的盐城保护区只剩下了留鸟和少量人工繁育的丹顶鹤。
丹顶鹤只在东北亚有分布，在中国，位于东北部的黑龙江扎龙国家级保护区和位于华中的江苏盐城国家级珍禽自然保护区是中国两个最重要的丹顶鹤栖息地，其中，扎龙保护区是野生丹顶鹤的夏季生活区域，盐城保护区是人工繁育丹顶鹤的重要基地。
《丹顶鹤》这部纪录片选取了中国的一南一北两个保护区对丹顶鹤进行拍摄。生活在中国东北的野生丹顶鹤夫妻在孵化时遇到同类袭击，卵被来自西伯利亚的寒潮冻死，丹顶鹤夫妻的孵化过程被迫半途而废。盐城保护区里，人工繁育出的小丹顶鹤遇到神秘病毒吞噬，全部死亡。本片透过2012年出生的雏鹤的命运，展现丹顶鹤成长的艰难和种群的危机。
