纪录片《中国记忆》是整理中国现当代重大事件、重要人物专题文献，采集口述史料、影像史料等新类型文献，收集手稿、信件、照片和实物等信息承载物，形成多载体、多种类的专题文献资源集合，并通过在馆借阅、在线浏览、多媒体展览、专题讲座等形式向公众提供服务的文献资源建设与服务项目。该项目立足于以专题为单位的文献资源建设与服务，着眼于国家图书馆的引领和全国图书馆及其他文化机构的合作。
在人类的蒙昧时期，渴望风调雨顺时的五谷丰登，促使世界上所有的民族，抬头仰望威力巨大的天空。于是先民们开始了对天的顶礼膜拜，用各种方式对天祭祀，以求得天神的眷顾和庇佑。人类文明踏入新千年之后，在北京南郊，世人看到了一处庄严静穆的建筑群，它就是–天坛。请收看《天坛》上集。
天坛建筑群包括陈设列神牌位以及皇室先祖的皇穹宇，用于孟春祈谷的祈年殿，有“小紫禁城”之称的专供皇帝沐浴斋戒的斋宫等，还有享誉海外的声学建筑 –回音壁，有着“人间偶语，天闻若雷”之说的三音石，以及充满了传奇故事的七星石等名胜古迹。天坛建筑群经过历代的修复和改建，集明/清建筑技艺之大成，是中国古建珍品，更称得上世界最大的祭天建筑群。请收看目《天坛》下集。
为了抵御外敌的劫掠和袭扰，中国的北方出现了万里长城，而在中国的南方则出现了土楼。两种造型各异的建筑，目的却都是一个，就是最大限度地防护自己，杀伤敌人。它们是如何做到这一点的呢?
在征战杀伐的远古年代里，任何一座建筑都必须像堡垒一样，否则人类将因建筑的崩塌而毁灭。人类能否用最简单的材料，设计建造出坚固耐用的建筑?明长城和永定土楼都给出了终极的答案。它们创造了永恒和不朽的建筑典范。这些防御性建筑是如何发挥其功能以抵御外敌入侵的呢?
河北蔚县，明代起经历了旷日持久的民族拉锯战，人们因为厌倦战争，所以产生了对神明强烈的依赖心理。明末清初以后，这里渐渐地从征战转为以农耕为主了。人们大量地修建庙宇，修建戏楼，用他们的话说就是“见堡就有村，见村就有庙，见庙就有戏楼”。为什么要“见村就有庙，见庙就有戏楼”呢?这里的庙宇和戏楼又有哪些独特的艺术风格呢?
“八百庄堡八百村，有村便有堡，见堡就是村”，河北省蔚县人总是这样形容自己的家乡。蔚县人世世代代都生活在这村堡里。这厚重的堡对这儿的人来说到底意味着什么呢?这里的九连环院/瓮城/小自在，是怎样的建筑形制呢?这里的民居又有着怎样的建筑奇观呢?
河北省蔚县被誉为“中国剪纸之乡”。蔚县剪纸是以阴刻/点染为主。它被列入国家非物质文化遗产名录。那里的剪纸手艺人都说，自古以来，蔚县人就爱看戏，所以就使得那里剪纸艺术风格以戏曲人物为主要题材。更主要的是，它那独特的工艺可谓一绝。艺人们一刀刻下百十张不在话下。不仅仅如此，其工艺上的绝技更是我们想象不到的。
河北蔚县地处边塞。这里的民间社火活动带有浓厚的宗教色彩。听说暖泉镇的“打树花”已经留传了上百年，打出来的树花像焰火一样好看。但是，这是一种什么样的民间绝技，会是像爆竹一样的东西吗?“五里不同风，十里不同俗”同是正月十五耍红火，宋家庄镇上苏庄村的风俗习惯却与暖泉镇大相径庭。那里的拜灯山民俗表演，又是怎样的一种活动?
1986年三星堆惊现世界。是谁留下了这些穿越了时间的青铜雕像呢?关于三星堆主人的争论，谁都没有十分确凿的证据，大家的论点都只停留在猜测和假说层面。21世纪初，又一个新的观点认为，三星堆出土的文物和云南哈尼族的历史传说/风俗习惯有着神秘的联系。哈尼族世世代代流传着一部瑰丽的迁徙史诗《哈尼阿陪聪坡坡》，在这部史诗里，讲述的是哈尼祖先筚路蓝缕，披荆斩棘在崇山峻岭之间不停迁徙，寻找美好家园的故事。新近出土的青铜人像，与三星堆的种种神秘联系，与都江堰一脉相承的远古智慧，世代相传的迁徙史诗，种种证据无不证明了哈尼族确实来自北方的古代氐羌游牧民族。因为环境/瘟疫/战争等种种原因，他们开始向南方迁徙，寻找更加适合生存的沃土，开创梦想中更加美好的生活。
在中国山西运城的新绛县，流传着一种闻名世界的鼓乐。传说，新绛县的鼓手们只使用一枚普通的小鼓，就能敲出十七种不同的声响，并且还能利用这十七种鼓声讲述不同的情节，这种特殊的演绎技法成为了国内外绝无仅有的一种奇观。为了探明这种奇妙的鼓技，摄制组深入新绛县，在民间访问大量民间艺人，探寻几近失传的鼓,技巧，为您展现一个最为乡土、最为真实的新绛鼓乐。
