人文地理纪录片《长江 1981》对于奔流不息的长江来说，这些画面只是一次短暂的回眸，但这匆匆一瞥，却记录下了中国的历史变迁。当时为了保证画质的清晰度，佐田雅志坚持使用35毫米的电影胶片来拍摄，而长江沿岸城市林立，胶片耗费巨大，最终一共用了113万英尺的胶片，才完成了全部拍摄……
这部出于对中国深切的爱而拍摄的影片却让佐田雅志先生背负了28亿日元（含利息共计35亿日元）的巨额债务。之后的30年间，佐田先生频繁开演唱会（平均两天就举办一场小型演唱会），在接近60岁的2010年才终于基本还清债务。
穿过人潮，佐田雅志来到一座古色古香的老宅里，拜访一位98岁的老人。这位老人并非凡夫俗子，而是满清最后一位秀才苏局仙。苏局仙时年98岁，是“南仙北佛”中的“南仙”，在书法界有着极高的造诣，一直活到110岁。佐田雅志此行并非是来讨教书法，而是请苏老为自己的电影提名。苏老研墨提笔，挥毫写下两个字——长江！
